Masters champion Danny Willett is one shot off the first-round lead at the BMW PGA Championship after carding a six-under-par 66 on the opening day's competition of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth on Thursday.

Willett, 28, who won his first major last month, made six birdies and kept a bogey off his card in a composed round, trailing 2009 U.S. PGA Championship winner Yang Yong-eun of South Korea, Dutchman Joost Luiten and Scott Hend of Australian.

Willett, playing his first tournament on home soil since his Masters victory in April, said, "I had a great reception all the way round. It's nice, they don't have to be here and they don't have to come out supporting, but they do.

"You've got to appreciate that and enjoy it and hopefully, touch wood, give them some good golf to watch."

Fellow Englishman Luke Donald, winner of the European Tour's flagship event in 2011 and 2012, started with a 68 and Luke Donald, also from England and winner of the European Tour's flagship event in 2011 and 2012, is one further back.

Defending champion Byeong-hun An held the early lead when he carded four birdies in succession from the fourth but a scrappy back nine saw the South Korean sign for a level-par 72. Endit
