Flamengo coach Muricy Ramalho quits due to illness

Xinhua, May 27, 2016 Adjust font size:

Brazilian football giants Flamengo on Thursday announced the departure of manager Muricy Ramalho due to ill health.

Ramalho has been on leave since being admitted to a Rio de Janeiro hospital on May 17 with an irregular heartbeat.

"We agreed to an amicable departure, " Flamengo football vice president Flavio Godinho said. "Muricy must be suffering a lot but he decided to leave the position and look after his health."

Ramalho led Flamengo to 13 victories, six draws and seven defeats after his appointment in December.

The sixty-year-old, whose coaching career spans more than two decades, has been beset by health problems in recent years.

In April last year he stepped down as manager of Flamengo's Brazilian rivals Sao Paulo due to illness.

Flamengo said youth coach Ze Ricardo will take charge of the first team for their next match in Brazil's Serie A championship against Ponte Preta on Sunday.

The Rubo-negro are currently 12th in the 20-team Brazilian Serie A standings with four points from the first three matches. Endit
