Road accident claims 20 lives in Nigeria

Xinhua, May 27, 2016 Adjust font size:

At least 20 people were confirmed dead early Thursday following a ghastly motor accident on a major highway in Nigeria's northwestern province of Katsina, an official said.

Abdu Bagadawa, sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Katsina State, said the accident, which occurred 20 km from Daura city, involved a Toyota bus and a Volkswagen Passat car.

The two vehicles, while on high speed, had a collision as a result of wrong overtaking by one of the drivers, the official told Xinhua, saying the automobiles caught fire and killed some of the passengers instantly.

Some of the passengers were burned beyond recognition, he said, adding 21 other passengers sustained various degrees of injury.

The road safety official lamented that most motorists had the habit of violating traffic regulations, in spite of the enlightenment efforts of the FRSC. Endit
