Morocco busted 29 terrorist cells in one year: official

Xinhua, May 27, 2016 Adjust font size:

Morocco has busted 29 terrorist cells that planned attacks against the North African kingdom in one year, according to the director of Morocco's Central Bureau of Judicial Investigation (BCIJ), Abdelhak El Khayam, on Thursday.

The strengthening of the Moroccan legal arsenal strategy has helped to thwart many operations that aimed at undermining Morocco's stability, El Khayam said in an interview with Moroccan daily Al Massae.

He said the recent arrest in the northern city of Tangier of a Chadian with suspected links to the Islamic State (IS) reveals a "qualitative shift in the strategy of this terrorist group."

On May 13, Morocco's Interior Ministry said it has arrested a Chadian national sent by the IS to carry out attacks against tourist sites and Western diplomatic buildings in Morocco.

Asked about the possible link between illegal immigration from sub-Saharan African countries and the training of terrorist sleeper cells, El Khayam said Moroccan security services will double their efforts to follow in the footsteps of illegal migrants and control their movements. Endit
