EU membership in Scotland's best interests: Scottish minister

Xinhua, May 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

The European Union (EU) membership is in Scotland's best interests, the Scottish government said on Wednesday.

"The Scottish government is clear that membership of the EU is in Scotland's best interests," Scottish Minister for International Development and Europe Alasdair Allan told the Scottish Affairs Committee of the House of Commons in British parliament.

"Many of the rights Scots enjoy as part of the EU are engrained in our daily lives, such as social protections, parental leave and paid holidays," said Allan.

"After over 40 years of EU membership, it's hard to imagine not being able to benefit from our access to the EU single market and the freedom to live, study, work or travel within the European Union," Allan was quoted as saying in a press release.

Britain will hold a referendum on June 23 to decide whether it should remain in the EU.

More than three-quarters of Scots will back a vote for Britain to stay in the EU, latest poll results showed. Endit
