Most German economists oppose Brexit: Ifo

Xinhua, May 25, 2016 Adjust font size:

German research institute Ifo reported here on Tuesday that an overwhelming majority of German economists oppose UK's leaving of the European Union.

According to a latest Ifo's survey, 85 percent of the surveyed economists are against the Brexit, with only 10 percent in favor.

"This result fits surprisingly well with the opinion voiced by the experts in the World Economic Survey (WES) of the Ifo Institute," Niklas Potrafke, head of the Ifo center for public finance and political economy, said.

Potrafke explained that WES polled more than 700 experts from 113 countries and regions on Brexit in April, with 86.6 percent of the polled against it.

The results of the survey show that 54 percent of the respondents think that a Brexit would lead to strong economic disadvantages for the UK, while 32 percent see some economic disadvantages for the UK.

In addition, 65 percent of survey economists believe that the German economy will only experience minor economic drawbacks, another 12 percent anticipate strong disadvantages, the Munich-based think tank said.

Ifo is one of Europe's leading research institutes. Its business climate index is considered among the most important barometers for the German economy. Endit
