Portugal reactivates 19 courts across country

Xinhua, May 25, 2016 Adjust font size:

Portugal's Justice Minister Francisca Van Dunem revealed on Tuesday that 19 courts across the country, mostly in rural areas, will be reactivated.

The courts were closed down during the latest reform of the judiciary system just under two years ago.

They will be reactivated in order to bring citizens closer to the justice system and to fight against inland desertification, according to a document presented by Van Dunem which Portuguese Lusa News Agency had access to, and which was handed in to MPS of the committee of constitutional affairs.

Van Dunem said the reactivation of the courts will reduce costs for those who seek justice, adding that the alterations of the judicial system will mean an investment of up to 500,000 euros (555,000 U.S. dollars) due to the costs of displacement of witnesses. Endit
