Burundi minister launches campaign against corruption, fraud

Xinhua, May 25, 2016 Adjust font size:

Burundian Good Governance and Planning Minister Serges Ndayiragije Tuesday launched in Nyanza-Lac district in Makamba province, 120 km south of the Burundian capital Bujumbura, the campaign of mobilization against corruption and fraud.

"Corruption and fraud are a reality in Burundi. They have been jeopardizing peace and development in the country as very few people have been accumulating undue wealth from fraud and corruption money," said Ndayiragije at the launch of the campaign against corruption and fraud for the southern region of Burundi.

Participants to the meeting included local administration leaders, heads of departments and representatives of businesspersons in Makamba, Bururi and Rumonge provinces that make up Burundi's southern region.

The good governance minister warned against some administration authorities who take bribes.

"We have heard reports saying that fraudulent items can be taken from one village to another. This means that local administration authorities are aware of the existence of fraud, but they keep quiet because they are given bribes. This is unacceptable. They will face sanctions," said Ndayiragije.

He called on citizens to inform services whose mandate is to fight corruption whenever they suspect any case of corruption or fraud.

Delegates of the Secretariat of the National Security Council as well as other involved ministries attended the launch of the campaign against corruption and fraud in the Burundian southern region. Endit
