Russian, U.S. FMs discuss joint operations against terrorist groups in Syria

Xinhua, May 24, 2016 Adjust font size:

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov discussed over phone on Monday with his U.S. counterpart John Kerry about the possibility of conducting joint operations against terrorist groups in Syria.

The conversation focused on the situation in Syria, including Moscow's proposal to conduct joint missions against terrorist groups and other illegal armed groups that have not acceded to the cease-fire regime, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The two sides also discussed the need to prevent the movement of militants and weapons across the Turkish border, said the statement.

Lavrov urged the U.S. side to fulfill as soon as possible its commitment to setting apart the pro-U.S. Syrian opposition fractions with Jabhat al-Nusra, which is not covered by the truce regime.

A Russia-U.S.-backed cessation of hostilities plan took effect late February. The truce has since largely held despite sporadic violations. Enditem
