The United Nations Mission for Stabilization of Congo (MONUSCO) has bombarded camps of Ugandan rebel group, the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo), it said on Wednesday.
"The bombardments that were carried out using MONUSCO and DR Congo army artillery, were targeting ADF camps in North Kivu province," the mission's interim spokesman Charles Bambara said in Kinshasa.
The spokesman said UN troops were operating alongside Congolese soldiers to help them recapture some of the zones occupied by ADF.
However, Bambara did not divulge information regarding the death toll from the operation, only promising to do so "in coming days."
The MONUSCO also appealed for support from civil society groups and local population to support the current operation against ADF.
The rebel group has been accused of killing over 1,000 civilians in North Kivu province since October 2014. Enditem
