The following are news highlights in major South African media outlets on Thursday.

-- The government and the mining industry had reached agreement on most of the sticking points in the new draft Mining Charter and would now deal with the "nitty-gritty", Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane said on Wednesday.

He was answering questions after addressing the Chamber of Mines annual general meeting, a month after he issued a new draft charter crafted without consultation that contains drastic changes to previous versions. (Business Day)

-- Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke is retiring from the Bench this week, stepping down from the second most powerful position in the judiciary after joining the Constitutional Court in 2002.

In his younger years, Moseneke was involved in the liberation struggle as a member of the Pan Africanist Congress. He was tried and convicted for his political activities and, at the age of 15, became the youngest prisoner to be incarcerated on Robben Island. (Mail & Guardian) Endit
