A senior Zimbabwe foreign affairs official on Thursday refuted a blatant rumors on human and drug trafficking circulating in local media.
Local media, quoting Beata Nyamupinga, a member of the national parliament, reported this week that more than 1,000 Zimbabweans, mostly women, had been trafficked to China in recent years and that about 200 of them were in jail and on death row for drug trafficking.
Permanent secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Joey Bimha said, according to information from the Zimbabwean Embassy in China, only less than 10 Zimbabweans had been arrested there over charges of participating in drug trafficking, which proves the rumor is a far deviation from facts.
The Zimbabweans were found having drugs in their suitcases upon arrest.
The report comes after 32 Zimbabwean women who had been trafficked to Kuwait were last month rescued, and helped by government, to come back home. Reports say there are more than 200 Zimbabwean women stranded in Kuwait after falling victim to human trafficking. Endit
