European Maritime Day to focus on investment in "blue growth"

Xinhua, May 17, 2016 Adjust font size:

European Maritime Day this year is to be celebrated in Turku, Finland on May 18-19, focusing on investment in "blue growth," according to a press release by the European Commission on Tuesday.

The annual occasion aims to help Europe's maritime community to network, discuss and forge joint action.

The conference in Turku, bringing together over 1,000 experts from the world, will provide exchanges of views on smart and sustainable solutions for blue growth, ocean governance, clean energy and skills development.

The EU has been a forerunner on maritime policies and in working so that seas, oceans and coasts become engines of job creation, growth and investment, the EU statement said.

EU Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Karmenu Vella said that the EU is in the lead on several blue economy technologies, such as renewable energy or clean shipping.

"Our commitment to sustainability is what gives us our competitive edge and what will open up new global business opportunities for our industry," said Vella. Endit
