Eurozone int'l trade declines in March

Both exports and imports of goods between the 19-member Eurozone and the rest of the world declined in March, according to the latest data released by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union (EU).

The first estimate for eurozone exports of goods to the rest of the world in March 2016 was 177.8 billion euros (201.3 billion U.S. dollars), a decrease of 3 percent compared with March 2015.

While the data shows that exports in the eurozone have declined, imports have fallen more. Eurostat said that eurozone imports from the rest of the world stood at 149.2 billion euros, a fall of 8 percent compared with March 2015.

As a result, the euro area recorded a 28.6-billion-euro surplus in trade in goods with the rest of the world in March 2016, compared with 19.9 billion euros in March 2015.

At the same time, Intra-eurozone trade also fell to 149.3 billion euros in March 2016, down by 2 percent when compared with March 2015.

For the months from January to March, the euro area exports of goods to the rest of the world fell to 485.8 billion euros, a decrease of 1 percent compared with the same period of last year. The imports at the same time fell to 432.0 billion euros, a decrease of 3 percent, Eurostat said. Endit
