Alleged militant arrested in Bangladesh over killing of English professor

Xinhua, May 17, 2016 Adjust font size:

An alleged militant has been arrested in Bangladesh's northwestern Rajshahi region over killing of a university professor, a police official said Tuesday.

The detainee is said to be member of the banned Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB).

Rajshahi University's English Department Professor AFM Rezaul Karim Siddiquee was hacked to death last month.

Criminals slit the throat of the professor with sharp weapons on April 23 and they slashed his neck while he was waiting for a bus near his residence in Bangladesh's Rajshahi district, some 256 km northwest of capital Dhaka.

Siddiquee, also a writer and cultural activist, died on the spot.

"We've arrested one JMB man who directly took part in the murder," said Rajshahi Metropolitan Police commissioner Md. Shamsuddin told journalists on Tuesday.

He, however, said all the JMB men involved in the killing will be arrested soon.

A number of secularist writers, bloggers and publishers in Bangladesh have been killed or seriously injured in attacks perpetrated by Islamist extremists since 2013.

Militants have claimed responsibility for the past murders.

JMB, campaigning for establishment of Islamic rule in Bangladesh, carried out a series of bombings in 63 out of the country's 64 districts, including the capital of Dhaka on Aug. 17, 2005, leaving two people dead and 150 others injured.

Hundreds of JMB leaders and activists were rounded up while six top leaders of the group, including Shaikh Abdur Rahman, were hanged in 2007. Endit
