HIV infection cases nearly double in Russia's Far East region

Xinhua, May 17, 2016 Adjust font size:

The number of HIV infection cases in Russia's Far East Sakhalin region has almost doubled in 2015, Russia's Health Ministry said in a statement Tuesday.

"Compared to 2014, the HIV infection rate in 2015 increased from 26.9 up to 46.3 per 100,000 people. The official number of HIV/AIDS carriers in the Sakhalin region has grown to 1,051 since 1993," the statement said.

According to statistics, 164 HIV infected people there have died, while AIDS has killed 44 people. Currently, 603 infected people are registered in Sakhalin's dispensaries.

About 0.5 percent of the Russian population was officially registered as HIV-positive in 2014, said a report by the Russian Federal AIDS Center issued in 2014.

The Sakhalin region will hold a campaign on May 20 to stop the spread of HIV and AIDS. Endi
