29 militants killed in northern Afghan airstrikes

Xinhua, May 16, 2016 Adjust font size:

About 29 militants were killed in two separate airstrikes in northern Afghanistan on Monday, authorities said.

"Some 13 militants were killed following an airstrike in Surkhkotal area, Baghlan province," the Afghan army's 209 Shaheen Corps said in a brief statement.

A heavy machine gun was also destroyed in the attack which occurred at around midday, the statement added.

In neighboring Kunduz province, 16 militants were killed after an unmanned plane of the coalition forces struck a Taliban hideout in Mullah Quli locality of Dasht-i-Archi district earlier on Monday, district governor Nasruddin Nazari told Xinhua.

The two provinces have been the scene of clashes between security forces and militants over the past weeks.

The Afghan security forces have beefed up security operations against militants since early April after Taliban militants started their so-called annual spring offensive and step up attacks across the country.

The Taliban has yet to make comments. Enditem
