Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni on Thursday was sworn in for another five-year term in office after winning the Feb. 18 contested elections.
The colorful ceremony held in the capital Kampala was witnessed by several African leaders, diplomats and a mammoth crowd.
To mark the event, fighter jets and helicopters also flew past the crowd in what could be described as a show of military might.
After swearing in and being handed the instruments of power, Museveni in his inaugural speech said his main priority in the next term will be fighting corruption.
He also said that he will work on making Uganda a middle income country.
Museveni's swearing in stretches his over 30 years' rule after he captured power in 1986 following a five year rebellion.
The Opposition contested the Feb. 18 election results alleging that there was massive rigging by the government in power.
Amama Mbabazi, a presidential candidate in the elections, petitioned Court contesting the results but the Court ruled otherwise noting that the election anomalies did not affect the final results.
Other opposition leaders have vowed to hold protests demanding for an international audit into the election results.
Kizza Besigye, who was the first runner up in the election, has been in and out of police cells since the election day.
He is currently under police detention, a move the police say is aimed at stopping him from disrupting the inauguration ceremony.
Security was beefed up both in the capital and other major towns across the country to stop anticipated opposition protests. Endit
