Int'l aviation organization holds climate meeting on flight emissions

Xinhua, May 12, 2016 Adjust font size:

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) started a weeklong meeting on Wednesday to hammer out an agreement on flight emissions.

Representatives from ICAO's 191 members attended the meeting held at its headquarters in Montreal.

At the 38th triennial ICAO Assembly in 2013, the 191 members agreed on what they call a "landmark" resolution to address aviation's impacts on climate change.

The resolution requires a 2-percent annual improvement in fuel efficiency until 2050 and a commitment to longer-term environmental protection.

The final resolution will be adopted by the ICAO Council, and then voted on by all 191 members at ICAO's 39th Assembly this fall.

If passed, it will be the first emission mitigation tool for airlines, a significant complement to the Paris Agreement.

Since 2010, ICAO members have been working together on a wide range of environmental protection initiatives, including this resolution to cut carbon emissions from international flights. Endi
