Passenger traffic at Brussels airport decreased by 29.1 percent year-on-year in March after the Belgian capital was hit by terror attacks on March 22, Brussels-based Airports Council International (ACI) Europe said in a statement on Wednesday.
Twin suicide bombings hit Brussels Zaventem Airport shortly after 8 a.m.(0600 GMT) local time on March 22. About an hour later, a suicide bomber blew himself up in a Brussels metro station near the headquarters of the European Commission. The attacks killed 32 people and wounded more than 300.
The attacks in the departure hall of Brussels airport forced its closure for 12 days. The airport resumed its flights with a temporary registration infrastructure on April 3 and the departure hall partially reopened on May 1.
In the first quarter, passenger traffic at Brussels airport decreased by 5.3 percent compared to the same period last year, according to the statement.
Across Europe, passenger traffic increased 7.6 percent in March, the statement said. For European airports, the number of passengers increased by 8.2 percent in the first three months of the year. Endit
