Implementation of the Southern Gas Corridor is a top priority for the European Union (EU), head of EU Delegation to Azerbaijan Malena Mard said here Wednesday.
The European Union has shown readiness to "do everything possible to ensure that the project will be implemented in time," she said.
The construction of Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), which is part of the Southern Gas Corridor, will start on May 17 in the Greek city of Thessaloniki, she added.
As for the cooperation between the EU and Azerbaijan, Mard said that the European Union is a major trading partner of Azerbaijan and is interested in furthering trade cooperation.
Trans Adriatic is a pipeline project to transport natural gas from the Caspian sea (Azerbaijan), starting from Greece via Albania and the Adriatic Sea to Italy and further to Western Europe.
TAP project envisages transportation of gas from the Stage 2 of development of Azerbaijan's Shah Deniz gas and condensate field to the EU countries.
The 870-kilometer pipeline will be connected to the Trans Anatolian Pipeline on the Turkish-Greek border, run through Greece, Albania and the Adriatic Sea, before coming ashore in Italy's south. TAP's initial capacity will be 10 billion cubic meters of gas a year, expandable to 20 billion cubic meters. Endit
