Nigerian navy repels pirate attacks on merchant vessels

Xinhua, May 11, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Nigerian navy says it has averted pirate attacks on three merchant vessels since last week.

Spokesperson for the navy, Commodore Christain Odogwu Ezekobe, said on Tuesday that the vessels were attacked around Brass waterways in oil-rich Bayelsa state on May 3 and 4.

He said the pirates had wanted to seize the vessels but then fled after the timely response of the special protective team deployed by the navy.

Piracy off the coast of Nigeria has recently become an ever increasing problem in the Gulf of Guinea. Endit
