UN-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) said Tuesday its peacekeepers have managed to arrest two alleged perpetrators of Monday's attack on displaced persons site in Sudan's Darfur that left many killed.

"UNAMID condemns yesterday's attack on a part of the Internally Displaced Persons' (IDPs) Gathering Site in Sortony, North Darfur, where unidentified armed men on gun-mounted vehicles opened fire, killing two children and wounding several others, including a UNAMID peacekeeper," the mission said in a statement Tuesday.

The mission called on all parties to the conflict in Sortony to exercise maximum restraint, refrain from further acts of violence and resolve their issues through dialogues and mediation.

Earlier on Tuesday the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Sudan (OCHA) announced that six civilians were killed in a shooting incident by armed tribesmen in Sudan's Darfur region.

The injured are being treated at a medical clinic in Sortony, according to an press release by the UN office.

The armed clashes, which erupted between the Sudanese army and the Sudan Liberation Army (SLA)/Abdul-Wahid Mohamed Nur faction mid last January at Jebel Marra area, have increased the number of displaced people in the region which has been suffering from a civil war since 2003.

Recent UN statistics indicated that the number of people displaced by Jebel Marra battles amounted to around 94,000. Endit
