Zambia's registered voters hit 6.7 million

The number of registered voters in Zambia has now reached 6.7 million following a registration exercise conducted to capture new voters, the country's electoral body said on Tuesday.

The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) said a provisional register of voters has shown that the number of registered voters is 6,710,455 as of May 5, 2016 from 5,166,088 as of November last year.

Cris Akufuna, the electoral body's public relations manager said the total number of female voters in the provisional register stands at 3,375,009 while that of males stands at 3,335,446.

The provisional register has also shown that Lusaka Province has the highest number of registered voters with a total number of 1,121,846 followed by Copperbelt Province with a total of 1,038,434.

While Southern and Eastern Provinces have 812,590 and 777,379 registered voters respectively.

The electoral body has since set May 15 to May 21 for the general public to inspect their particulars in the provisional register.

Zambia will hold a general election on August 11 this year. Endit
