Zambia intercepts 33 Ethiopians in cargo container truck

Xinhua, May 11, 2016 Adjust font size:

Authorities in Zambia have intercepted a containerized truck carrying 33 Ethiopians and an Eritrean who were about to be trafficked outside the country, an immigration official said on Tuesday.

The prohibited immigrants were intercepted in Kafue town, south of Lusaka, the country's capital as they were being trafficked out of the country using a cargo container.

Immigration Department public relations officer Namati Nshinka said the illegal immigrants were found in the containerized truck after it was intercepted at a checkpoint without valid documents.

Preliminary investigations suggest they were heading to South Africa, he added in a statement.

The arrest comes barely a few days after the arrest of another batch of 43 Ethiopians in eastern Zambia.

The official said the department will continue to ensure border control and that only those with legal documentation enter, stay and leave the country when required. Endit
