Madrid winger Vazquez in Champions League fitness race

Xinhua, May 10, 2016 Adjust font size:

Real Madrid winger Lucas Vazquez faces a race against time in order to be fit for the Champions League final at the end of the month.

The youth team product, who has had an excellent end to the season, was forced to leave the pitch in the 75th minute of Sunday's 3-2 win at home to Valencia after suffering a blow on the knee.

He underwent tests on Monday and the club confirmed on its official website that he has suffered "a twisted left knee."

The injury means that Vazquez will certainly miss his side's final and decisive league game of the season on Saturday afternoon.

That game sees Real Madrid travel to face Deportivo la Coruna, knowing they need to win and for Barcelona not to win away to Granada in order to win the BBVA Primera Liga.

The race would then be on for Vazquez to recover in time for the Champions League final against neighbors, Atletico Madrid in Milan on May 28thwith the winger's chances of playing depending on just how serious the twist is.

The club has yet to specify a recovery time, although sources in the Spanish press advise the injury is not as serious as first thought and that he has a good chance of recovering in time to help his side chase their 11th Champions League title. Endit
