At least seven people were killed and more than 30 others injured in a road mishap in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand Monday, a police official said.

"The accident, involving a private bus with some 40 passengers on board, took place on a busy road in state capital Ranchi in the morning," he said, on condition of anonymity.

While seven passengers died on the spot, those injured have been admitted to a local hospital where the condition of four are said to be serious, the official said.

A probe has been ordered into the incident, he added.

India records one of the highest road accidents in the world, which claim the lives of over 130,000 people every year, according to official figures. Endit
