Pregnant refugees mark Mother's Day at muddy camp in Greece

Two pregnant refugees sent their Mother's Day message to the world from the muddy makeshift camp of Idomeni at the Greek-Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) border on Sunday, wishing for a better future.

According to Medecins Sans Frontieres Greece, Ahin, 22, and Amin, 21, both Syrians, have been living for the past two months at the camp which houses some 10,000 people stranded in Greece after the closing of borders along the Balkan route to central Europe in February.

Under tragic conditions, with shortage of food, water, medicines and hygiene problems, in tents soaked by the rain and mud, the two women are giving an everyday struggle to remain strong and deliver healthy babies in a few weeks.

Through the MSF which supports them and other refugees at Idomeni border crossing, along other NGOs, the two women called on the international community to help the refugees by opening the borders and allowing them to continue their journey in Europe.

Despite the efforts made by the Greek state and NGOs living conditions are difficult at the temporary hospitality facilities across Greece where some 54,000 people have been stranded, according to the latest figures.

"It is very hard living at Idomeni. A woman in my condition cannot have proper diet. This is my fourth attempt to have a child. I have already lost three babies," an MSF Greece statement quoted Ahin as saying. Endit
