Freiburg clinch second-division title, Leipzig ensure Bundesliga promotion

Xinhua, May 9, 2016 Adjust font size:

Freiburg have sealed the championship in Bundesliga' s second division while runner-up Leipzig booked their spot in Germany' s top flight for next season on Sunday.

The "Breisgauer" already wrapped their immediate promotion last week but the 2-0 victory over Heidenheim secured Christian Streich' s man the second division title for the fourth time in the club' s history.

However, goal-scoring opportunities remained a rare occurrence in the encounter for most of the time. As a result, the spectators had to wait until the 87th minute before Florian Niederlechner overcame Heidenheim' s well-positioned defence to make the game safe with a quick brace within four minutes.

"A dream has come true. A dream, which only a handful of people considered possible eleven months ago," Freiburg coach Christian Streich said.

Freiburg relegated into the second division last season but Streich' s man bounced back and worked out their prompt promotion into the top flight.

Elsewhere, second placed RB Leipzig secured their first Bundesliga promotion in the club' s young history. Seven years after the foundation, Leipzig become the 55th team to play in the Bundesliga.

The "Bulls" secured their promotion by courtesy of a 2-0 win over Karlsruher SC as Emil Forsberg and Rene Vollath were on target to provide the crucial victory.

Nuremberg, who sit on the third place, still have the chance to earn a ticket for the first division as they reaped a promotion play-off spot with the right to encounter either relegation threatened Bremen, Frankfurt or Stuttgart for two legs.

The second division concludes the season 2015-2016 on Sunday while the first division already completes the season on Saturday. Endit
