SA public protector receives death threats

Xinhua, May 9, 2016 Adjust font size:

South African Public Protector Thuli Madonsela has received death threats from a known gangster who is paid to kill her, her office confirmed on Sunday.

Madonsle has been warned about a plot to have her killed and the plot was revealed to Madonsela in April by an informant, Madonsela's spokesperson, Kgalalelo Masibi said.

Masibi said the public protector is concerned that police are not taking the threats on her life seriously.

The alleged hit was supposedly funded to the tune of 740, 000 rand (about 50,000 US dollars) by a gangster in Western Cape Province.

Madonsela's office told the South African Broadcasting Corporation that Madonsela was not sure what the reasons for the hit may be. The office also refused to identify the gangster and those behind the plot.

Madonsela has been spearheading an anti-corruption campaign in the country.

Also on Sunday, the opposition Democratic Alliance said it will be seeking an urgent update on the investigation into the serious allegations about the death threat against Madonsela.

The South African Police Service must investigate these allegations and tell Parliament what will be done to ensure the safety of Madonsela, the party said in a statement. Endit
