UN chief reiterates support to Comoros in holding peaceful, credible elections

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Friday reiterated his commitment to supporting the Comorian authorities to create "a climate of confidence, conducive to peaceful, inclusive and credible elections," said a statement of Ban's spokesman.

The Secretary-General is following closely political developments in Comoros in the wake of the recent judgment of the Constitutional Court ordering a partial re-run of the elections for president and for governor of Anjouan, said the statement.

The new polls are scheduled for May 11, 2016, said the statement.

The Secretary-General urges the government and all the actors involved in the electoral process to "respect the legislation and the established rules, in conformity with the protocole d'accord of March 15 2016."

Comoros, an island country in the Western Indian Ocean, held elections on April 10 to choose its President and governors of Grande Comore, Anjouan and Moheli.

According to media reports on April 15, Azali Assoumani, a former coup leader, won 40.98 percent of the vote in the presidential election, ahead of his main rival Vice President Mohamed Ali Soilihi with 39.87 percent. Enditem
