Nepalese president's visit to India cancelled

Xinhua, May 7, 2016 Adjust font size:

Nepalese President Bidya Devi Bhandari's visit to India, which was scheduled on Monday, was scrapped after the country's cabinet failed to endorse the trip, officials said on Friday.

"President's per-scheduled trip to India has been cancelled as the cabinet didn't approve it," Bheshraj Adhikari, a key aide of Bhandari, told Xinhua.

Bhandari, the first woman president of the Himalayan country, was to start a week-long trip to the southern neighbor at the invitation of her Indian counterpart Pranab Mukherjee.

The Nepalese government has conveyed the Indian government regarding cancellation of the trip through diplomatic channels, a senior official said.

The Nepalese government has not given reasons behind the cancelled trip.

Bhandari was also scheduled to take part in the Simhastha Kumbh Mela, a religious Hindu event in Ujjain of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. Endit
