Nigerian police rescue abducted former minister

Police in Nigeria's southwestern state of Ogun have rescued former Minister of State for Education, Iyabo Anisulowo, who was kidnapped last Wednesday.

Anisulowo was rescued at about 19:00 local time on Tuesday at Gbegbelawo village near Olorunda town in the state, a state police spokesperson told reporters.

Two people were arrested during the rescue operation.

After being freed, Anisulowo described her experience as "terrible" and "dehumanizing".

She said she had not eaten anything since Wednesday and had only lived on water.

Ogun state commissioner of police, Abdulmajid Ali, said the ringleader of the gang behind the abduction had been arrested.

Ogun state governor, Ibikunle Amosun, said abductors had demanded a ransom of 200 million naira (one million U.S. dollars).

He expressed confidence in the police's ability to provide security in the state but called on the federal government to "adequately" equip them. Endit
