Lithuania to send military doctors to Jordan: president

Xinhua, May 4, 2016 Adjust font size:

Lithuania stands ready to send military doctors to help Syrian refugees in Jordan, Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite said on Tuesday.

"It is of crucial importance to help the migrants as close as possible to their conflict zones, in order to prevent them from taking further dangerous routes," local broadcaster lrt.lt quoted Grybauskaite as saying.

The Lithuanian president will travel to Jordan on May 4-5 to meet with King Abdullah II of Jordan and open the global conference "Women in Politics: Fast Forward."

Grybauskaite repeatedly said that Lithuania would contribute to solving the migration crisis as much as it was able.

The first medical workers from Lithuania should be sent to Jordan as of start of 2017.

"In the meantime, it is being considered which particular areas need help. After the needs are made clear, a decision on the scale of support will be made," the ministry of national defense spokesperson told ELTA news agency.

Jordan has faced a huge influx of refugees. Three million people, including 700,000 Syrians, have sought refuge in the country.

Jordan has the biggest refugee camp in the region. The Zaatari camp is home to 81,000 refugees and is equivalent in population to the fourth largest city in Jordan. Endit
