Tokyo stocks drop on cautious mood ahead of central banks' meetings

Tokyo stocks closed lower Tuesday as a lackluster start following a drop in oil prices and Wall Street's sluggish performance overnight was followed by a circumspect market mood ahead of central bank policy meetings in both the U.S. and Japan.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 86.02 points, or 0.49 percent, from Monday to end the day at 17,353.28.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 10.14 points, or 0.72 percent, to close at 1,391.69.

Notable decliners at the closing bell comprised marine transportation, iron and steel and banking-linked shares and the day's turnover was 2,080.4 billion yen (18.75 billion U.S. dollars). Endit
