Cholera spreads to S. Zambia; 2 killed, 35 hospitalized

Xinhua, April 25, 2016 Adjust font size:

A cholera outbreak in Zambia has now spread to the southern part of the country, killing two people, state-run news agency reported on Monday.

Stephen Shajanika, Mazabuka District medical officer, said the disease broke out at five fishing camps in the district, and that the disease could have been transmitted by fishmongers from capital Lusaka, where it broke out in early February, according to the Zambia News and Information Service.

Health authorities in the district have since established two treatment centers where another 35 cholera patients are receiving treatment.

The disease has so far affected over 500 people, and killed 16 nationwide, according to health officials. Endit
