1st LD: At least 6 killed in suicide bomb attack at Shiite mosque in Iraqi capital

Xinhua, April 22, 2016 Adjust font size:

At least six people were killed and 31 others injured on Friday in a suicide bomb attack at a Shiite mosque in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, a police source told Xinhua.

The attack occurred when a suicide bomber detonated his explosive vest among dozens of worshippers who were observing Friday weekly prayer at a Shiite mosque in Baghdad southwestern suburb of Radwaniyah, the source said on condition of anonymity.

The massive blast also caused severe damage to the mosque, the source said.

The toll could rise as ambulances, police and civilian vehicles were evacuating the victims to nearby hospitals and medical centers, the source added.

Iraq is currently witnessing a wave of violence since the Islamic State group took control of parts of Iraq's northern and western regions in June 2014.

Earlier, a report by the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) estimated that 1,119 Iraqis were killed and 1,561 others wounded in acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflict in March across Iraq. Endit
