Myanmar Foreign Minister Aung San Suu Kyi Friday stressed that the new government would adopt a people-centered foreign policy, saying that economic and social development cannot be achieved without the participation of the people.

Clarifying the country's foreign policy with 63 foreign diplomats at home and abroad at the Foreign Office in Nay Pyi Taw, Suu Kyi recalled that since regaining independence in 1948, Myanmar has been following an independent, non-aligned and active foreign policy, dealing closely and friendly with not only neighboring countries but also the world nations.

Lying at a meeting point between Southeast Asia and South Asia, Myanmar is geopolitically important with many challenges, she said.

She emphasized people-to-people engagement in foreign relations, maintaining that relationship between countries can be long lasting only when best relationship between their peoples are fostered.

Aung San Suu Kyi's official meeting with foreign diplomats as a foreign minister is the first after the new government of her ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) took office on April 1. Enditem
