Uganda to open against rivals Kenya in 2016 ICC Women' s World Cup qualifiers

Uganda will open against arch rivals Kenya in the 2016 International Cricket Council Women' s Twenty20 Cricket World Cup qualifiers in Harare, Zimbabwe.

Justine Ligyalingi, the Uganda Cricket Association Chief Executive Officer told Xinhua on Wednesday that they have received communication from the International Cricket Council (ICC) that Uganda will open against Kenya before playing hosts Zimbabwe the same day on April 23.

The qualifiers will take place in the Zimbabwean capital Harare April 23-26 with the best team qualifying for the global qualifiers.

Ligyalingi said that the team under Coach Jonathan Sebanja is now doing their final touches before departure on Friday.

He said the qualifier will be played on a double round robin system. Hosts Zimbabwe, Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania will compete in the tournament as Namibia and South Africa withdrew.

Barbara Mukankusi, one of the senior players told Xinhua in an interview that they are going to take every game seriously because it is a round robin and all points will count.

"We need to win our opening game against Kenya so that we get good momentum," Mukankusi said.

The ICC Women Cricket World Cup originally consisted of eight teams, the top six teams of the ICC Women's Twenty20 rankings and the rest of the two determined by a qualification process. In 2014 it was expanded to total of 10 participating teams. Endit
