China's Zhang Anda beaten by Hawkins at snooker worlds

Xinhua, April 21, 2016 Adjust font size:

China's Zhang Anda was beaten by former runner-up Barry Hawkins in the first round of the snooker world championships at Crucible Theatre in Sheffield on Wednesday.

Hawkins, the only player who reached at least the semifinals at the world championship in each of the last three years, beat Zhang 10-5 to set up a last 16 showdown against five-time champion Ronnie O'Sullivan on Saturday.

Hawkins was runner-up to O'Sullivan in Sheffield in 2013 then lost to the same opponent in the semis in 2014, and to Shaun Murphy in the last four a year ago.

World number 11 Hawkins led Zhang 6-3 overnight and extended his lead in the first frame, making a break of 52. Zhang won a scrappy 11th frame to make it 7-4 before Hawkins took the next with a top run of 57. Zhang then made an impressive 47 clearance in frame 13 to keep alive his hopes of a fight back at 8-5.

Hawkins dominated after the interval, making a 55 to go four frames ahead, then finishing in style with a brilliant 141 total clearance. Endit
