India approves signing of Paris pact on climate change

Xinhua, April 20, 2016 Adjust font size:

India on Wednesday approved the signing of the Paris agreement on climate change, at a Cabinet meeting in the national capital.

Sources said the Indian Cabinet's nod formally paved the way for the signing of the climate pact, adopted by more than 190 countries in December 2015, later this week.

"On behalf of the Indian government, Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar will sign the pact on April 22 at the United Nations in New York in presence of Secretary General Ban Ki-moon," sources said.

Following the signing ceremony by India and several other countries, the climate pact will enter into force within 30 days, provided at least 55 countries deposit their acceptance with the UN.

"The Paris agreement on climate change is a milestone in global climate cooperation. It is meant to enhance the implementation of the Convention...," an official statement said.

The pact "recognises the principles of equity and common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities in the light of different national circumstances", it added. Endit
