Indian police horse, injured during BJP protest, dies

Xinhua, April 20, 2016 Adjust font size:

An Indian police horse, who lost one of his legs after being attacked during a political protest in the northern state of Uttarakhand last month, died Wednesday.

Shaktiman, the police horse whose tragic story moved many across India, succumbed to his injuries around 4 p.m. (local time), a senior official told the media in state capital Dehra Dun.

In fact, the 13-year-old horse's leg had to be amputated after it suffered multiple blows during a protest by the country's ruling and the state's opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in March.

A team of doctors, including one from the United States, was involved in its treatment and it had been put on a prosthetic leg brought from America.

Ganesh Joshi, a BJP legislator who allegedly carried out the brutal attack on the horse that was caught on TV cameras, had been arrested soon after the incident and he is currently out on bail.

"I am shocked, I can't express my feeling in words... we all thought Shaktiman was recovering well," former Chief Minister of the state Harish Rawat said. Endit
