UN official arrives in Maldives to help resume key talks

Xinhua, April 18, 2016 Adjust font size:

Tamrat Samuel, Senior Advisor to the United Nations Department of Political Affairs, arrived in the Maldives on Monday to help the government in reconvening political party talks, the Maldives High Commission in Sri Lanka said in a statement.

Samuel is visiting the Maldives on an invitation from President Abdulla Yameen and is accompanied by a high-level delegation from the UN Department of Political Affairs.

In February, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Miroslav Jena also concluded a two day visit to Maldives at the invitation of the Maldives government to assist the government on dialogue with the political parties.

In its effort for political reconciliation and to focus on the implementation of Yameens' economic agenda, the Maldives government held its first round of political party talks on March 3, the statement said.

During his visit, Samuel is expected to hold discussions with government leaders, political parties, civil society and other key stakeholders in the island nation. Enditem
