Over 1,300 Rwandan refugees repatriated from DR Congo

About 1,300 Rwandan refugees have been repatriated to Rwanda this year in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo), an official source said Thursday.

The North Kivu National Refugees Commission (CNR) coordinator in North Kivu province, who made the revelations, said some 200,000 other Rwandan refugees are still living in North Kivu.

In October 2015, a ministerial meeting was held in Geneva, aiming to find a solution to the problem of Rwandan refugees in DR Congo. It recommended that voluntary repatriation operations of Rwandan refugees should end by Dec. 31, 2016.

Rwandan refugees entered the east of DR Congo in 1994 following the massacre of Tutsis in Rwanda. Enditem
