The Nigerian government has restated its commitment to diversifying the economy to achieve one of the objectives of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for the country.
Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, the Special Adviser to the President on SDGs, gave the assurance on Wednesday in Lagos while speaking at a private sector engagement on SDGs.
The workshop was jointly organized by the United Nations Information Center (UNIC) and the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC).
The SDGs was adopted by the Heads of States at the 70th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2015 to address 17 goals and 169 targets for the growth of African countries.
Orelope-Adefulire said Nigeria had achieved a fair result in the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), but more needed to be done.
According to her, the government, led by President Muhammadu Buhari, is taking critical efforts toward the diversification policy, which is a major aspect of the SDGs in boosting the economy through self-sufficiency.
The president's aide said because of the failing oil price at the international market, it was necessary for government to look inwards.
Adefulire-Orelope said government was ready to explore new grounds and systems to ensure that the implementation of a diversified economy was made possible. Endit
