Iran confirms 4 commandos killed in Syria

Xinhua, April 12, 2016 Adjust font size:

Iran held a funeral ceremony for four of its army commandos who were recently killed in Syria, Tasnim news agency reported.

"Four commandos from Iran's army ground special forces were martyred during an advisory mission in Syria's Aleppo city and were laid to rest on Tuesday," reported Tasnim.

The commandos served in the army's ground force's 65th brigade, known as the Nohed brigade, or Green Berets.

The four Iranian commandos were killed during a major raid launched by thousands of al-Nusra Front militants, along with other terrorist groups in southern Aleppo, according to army ground force commander Brig. Gen. Ahmad Reza Pourdastan's statement to Tasnim on Tuesday.

The clashes which led to the martyrdom of the four Iranian commandos also incurred heavy losses upon the terrorists as 200 militants were killed and several tanks and personnel carriers belonging to the al-Nusra Front were destroyed, Pourdastan said.

Currently, Iran's army ground force's advisers are extensively helping Syria, along with the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Quds Force advisers, he was quoted as saying.

Iran said it deployed army ground force commandos on April 4th in Syria for an advisory mission.

Other units from the Iranian army ground forces also dispatched advisers to Syria, said Lieutenant Commander of the Iranian Army Ground Force for Coordination Brig. Gen. Ali Arasteh.

Iran has become a staunch regional ally of Syria throughout the country's long-term conflict, and its military advisers provide assistance to Syria in its fight against terrorism. Endit
