Magnitude 6.7 quake strikes off Vanuatu

A magnitude 6.7 quake struck off Vanuatu on Thursday afternoon, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said. The magnitude was initially measured at 7.0, but was later adjusted to 6.7.

The epicenter of the quake that struck from a depth of 26.8 kilometers at 2:32 p.m. local time (0332 GMT) was traced 106 kilometers west of Sola, Vanuatu, according to the USGS.

The Hawaii- based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not issue a tsunami warning, watch or advisory based on the quake.

There was no immediate report of casualty or damage.

Pacific island countries such as Vanuatu, Fiji and Tonga lie on the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of earthquake and volcanic zones where continental plates collide producing frequent seismic activities. Enditem
