28 kg African drug seized at Sofia Airport

Xinhua, April 6, 2016 Adjust font size:

Bulgarian customs officers at Sofia Airport have seized 28 kg of Khat, a narcotic plant grown in Africa, worth a street value of some 530,000 U.S. dollars, officials said Wednesday.

Inspectors found the illicit drug, which acts like amphetamines, in parcels arriving from Ethiopia, the National Customs Agency (NCA) said in a statement.

A Bulgarian citizen was arrested when he tried to take the items, NCA said.

According to its annual report, NCA seized a total of 188 kg of Khat in 2015.

Belgium and the Netherlands were the final destinations of this drug, the report said. Endit
