China's food poisoning deaths up in 2015

A total of 121 people died of food poisoning in China in 2015, up 10 percent from the previous year, said the National Health and Family Planning Commission on Friday.

The number of people who suffered from food poisoning last year was 5,926, up 4.7 percent, in a total of 169 cases.

Microbiological food poisoning was the cause of most illness, while poisonous material, including mushrooms, was the cause of most deaths. Poisonous mushrooms was involved in over 60 percent of the total cases reported.

The commission pledged to step up supervision of canteens in schools and work units as well as banquets in rural areas.

It also called for more public education about the dangers of food poisoning. Endi
