Bomb scare at Sweden's Landvetter airport

Xinhua, April 1, 2016 Adjust font size:

The domestic terminal at Gothenburg's Landvetter airport in western Sweden was evacuated Thursday following a bomb threat.

A bomb squad examined suspicious items at the airport: apparently one or several plastic bags with unknown content, local newspaper Goteborgsposten reported.

It was feared that the bags, spotted in the domestic terminal, contained pentyl -- a powerful explosive substance.

According to local police, Swedavia -- the company that operates Landvetter -- received a threatening phone call on Thursday morning. Airport staff members were on high alert and at noon, Swedavia security staff spotted the mysterious items in the domestic terminal and notified the police.

The area was evacuated and cordoned off. A bomb squad was called in to examine the suspicious items while police searched the terminal with sniffer dogs.

During the search, no vehicle was allowed into the airport area, but apparently air traffic could continue smoothly.

The search was called off after around 1.5 hours. No dangerous items were found and no one was injured.

Police spokesperson Hans Lippens said a preliminary investigation into unlawful threats is underway and that the Swedish security service, Sapo, is contributing to the investigation into who may have been behind the threatening phone call. Endit
